Making Cents: Eating Dinner Out vs Eating at Home

Eating dinner out vs eating
dinner at home. Say your family of four is going
out to dinner. Everyone orders the special for
$9.99 and a drink for a $1.50. With tax and tip, it comes out to be about fifteen dollars a person or 60 bucks! How long would you have to work
to pay for that dinner? If mom makes twenty dollars an hour she would need to work for three hours to pay for that, versus only one hour to eat at home. Now that’s some food for thought. Making Sense, learning how to make your money work for you. Sponsored by Numerical

  • It's crazy how people struggle to get into cooking and eating at home, as if it's inconvenient. It's cheaper and often healthier.

  • Eating out used to be reserved for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, etc. I don't even think people particularly enjoy eating out any more…but, they don't seem to be able to break the habit.
